Journey to the End of the World

Today we were supposed to go on a Jeep excursion but we just had a call it was being cancelled because of the miserable weather – it is very rainy and windy.
Yesterday we drove to west from here.  We had been told about a route that goes north and then west.  It did prove to be a very nice drive.

On the way we saw nesting storks which was interesting.

We also had been told it was worth just driving into the small villages and looking around.  We did see some interesting places.

In one a café was baking bread in an outdoor wood oven.  We were able to see the baker putting the bread in the oven but we didn’t stay long enough to get to try it.  I’m sure it was delicious.

In another town we got on some very narrow streets which made it difficult to maneuver and caused some tense moments.  We also visited the ruins of the last occupied Moorish Castle in Aljezur.

From there we worked our way out to the Atlantic Coast and down to Cabo de Sao Vicente – at the extreme southwest of Europe.  In the middle ages it was believed to be the end of the world.
