Jim’s Training on Buying Oranges (and Beer)

We had a great day today.  The weather is a little warmer but not hot!  In the morning we got our excursions organized.  This Sunday the 3rd we are doing an overnight trip to Lisbon;  Thursday the 7th a daytime jeep excursion that everyone raves about; and then on the 13th a 3 day trip to Seville, Spain; Tangiers, Morocco and Gibralter.  After this was all organized we headed off to Monchique, this highest point in the Algarve (less than 1000 meters).  We stopped at a great place for lunch – lunch really seems to be dinner here.  We felt we were in an authentic Portuguese restaurant as there did not appear to be any other tourists there.  Lois had “young goat” and the rest of us had the fish special.
On the way down we stopped to buy oranges.  We had been told that we would see them for sale by the side of the road.  I was driving so Jim was the shopper who jumped out to buy them.  At the first stop he bought from a little old lady and came back to the car with 4 oranges for 1 euro.  We thought this wasn’t enough oranges so we made another stop and this time he came back with 25 oranges for 1 euro.  We weren’t sure if he got ripped off by the little old lady or became a better bargainer.

We also stopped at a ceramic/tile place.  They had a huge selection of brightly painted, Portuguese ceramics.  Just did a lot of looking and admiring the craftsmanship.
When we returned, Jim was having a beer – we had bought them when we did the shopping yesterday.  He had already had a couple but I hadn’t.  I decided to have one and as I was having it I read the bottle and with my limited Portuguese, I realized it was a near beer not a regular beer!
